Spotlighting exceptional teaching at 磁力猫

磁力猫 will be recognizing the efforts of 40 exceptional instructors who were nominated for their innovative, engaging and flexible approaches to meet the needs of all learners.

The college community will gather on Friday, May 2, for the fourth annual celebration to honour teachers who have contributed to advancing learning and better serving students鈥 diverse needs. While nominations came in from across the college, it was once again the students who really did their homework and submitted the vast majority of nominations.

鈥淭his grassroots annual celebration, which was developed by faculty for faculty, gives us the opportunity to shine a light on the incredible work being done at the college to support student learning,鈥 says Martha McAlister, Education Developer with the Dr. Lloyd Morin Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. 鈥淚t鈥檚 inspiring to see how students are willing to take time out of their busy lives to acknowledge the teachers they appreciate, who have made such a difference in their lives. I have so much gratitude and admiration for these amazing educators, who work tirelessly for students every day. We know it鈥檚 these teachers who are the backbone of what we consider the 鈥楥amosun Advantage.鈥欌

The program will include a presentation of certificates, followed by an opportunity for photos and mingling. In addition to the Teacher Recognition acknowledgements, there will be a special celebration for those recognized for Open Education and Zero Textbook Cost Award.

Here is just a small sample of what students had to say about their teachers:

Brandon Devnich (Computer Science faculty) was nominated five times by ten students. Students said: 鈥淏randon inspires us to challenge ourselves, and we know that if things ever feel overwhelming, communicating with him will lead to a solution. He recognizes effort and dedication, and we are huge fans of his teaching style. We are looking forward to taking more of his classes鈥攖hey may be difficult, but you emerge stronger, more prepared, and ready to tackle real-world challenges.鈥

Brianna Waldman (Sport Management faculty). A student said: 鈥淏rianna truly cares about us, understanding the demands of student life and how external variables can affect performance. She鈥檚 always there to support any way she can, so students can put their best foot forward. Brianna creates opportunities outside the classroom to help students build portfolios and get hands-on industry experience. Several students have walked away with jobs because of Brianna鈥檚 efforts to create opportunities we wouldn鈥檛 have had otherwise.鈥

Brooke Cameron (Biology faculty). A student said: 鈥淏rooke is engaged, experienced, flexible and also hilarious. She loves science, and her passion makes a challenging course accessible and fun. Though tests are a necessary evil, she made sure we were well-prepared, helping ease our anxiety. Her encouragement and creativity empowered me to flourish not only in her class but all my others. I love her.鈥

Larry Lee (Chemistry faculty). A student said: 鈥淧rofessor Lee is patient, charismatic, and creates great engagement in his class. He鈥檚 very polite, respectful, and forgiving when it comes to mistakes. His passion is undeniable, and his ability to inspire students is palpable. Professor Lee ignites a love for learning.鈥

Marcey Louie (Ey膿蕯 Sq葍鈥檒ewen faculty). A student said: 鈥淢arcey has been incredibly accommodating to all students in the class. She offers strategies such as breathing exercises, to help students cope with challenging subjects. Marcey fosters a healthy learning environment by creating a space in which everyone has a voice.鈥

Sue Abuleal, (Nursing faculty) was nominated seven times by eight students plus two colleagues. A student said: 鈥淪ue has left a lasting positive impression on me. The pressure of school can be overwhelming, but her empathy and light-heartedness helped ease our nerves and make the learning process more enjoyable! The way Sue interacted with patients, showed genuine kindness, inspiring me to be that kind of nurse.鈥

The teaching awards are an initiative of Camosun鈥檚 Teaching and Learning Council - a collaborative, peer-based, interdisciplinary group of faculty from across the college with a passion for advancing quality teaching and learning at Camosun, including advocacy, supports and strategies.
